Married Without Children

America by Simon & Garfunkel on Grooveshark

Lately, I've been all about bringing my camera along to capture snapshots of our everyday life. Things we love to do, that I don't ever want to forget.

We often focus on documenting the wedding, arrival of a new baby, children's big milestones etc. But there's something about right now that feels worthy of being remembered. Married without children. The middle, if you will.

This confuses some people on the outside looking in. When are you two going to have children?  The trap... Sometimes those outside voices start to seep in and sound like my own. I feel constant pressure to hurry up and get to the next stage of our lives.

I get so caught up in the race, that I forget how important right now is. Married without children does have its perks. We get to do things like browse through our favorite record store on a Saturday at our leisure. We can be totally spontaneous and make decisions with little forethought or planning involved.

Best of all, we've had time to focus on one another. We've been working on building a solid foundation before we grow our family.

I'm beyond excited for the day that we have children of our own, but right now I'm enjoying spending way too much (uninterupted) time looking for the right Simon & Garfunkel album.

  1. This is so important, Brhea, and I'm so happy for the two of you to be realizing how important it truly is....to build that foundation. You guys have an amazing relationship and I'm happy for the both of you. Thank you for sharing your life with us.

  2. Beautiful pictures. I totally agree with you. Andrew and I have been together for 4 years (come April 1st). Now that we live together, there's so much pressure for us to get married. As much as I'd love the big wedding, it's expensive and I'm not in a place in my life to start planning that.

Plus, not being married doesn't change the fact that we still love and care about each other. When we're ready, we'll make those steps. But right now, we're just trying to enjoy each day.

Not sure if you had that same pressure before marriage? I'm sure I'll be in your shoes when we do tie the knot.

  3. I agree with Alex! I was just about to say that EVERYONE keeps asking when Andy and I are going to get married and my typical response is "some day :)" but it gets exhausting. We're just enjoying life, together and I'm totally fine with that. Plus we live together and have a cat and a dog together - it will happen eventually people.

  4. I totally hear you :) We've been married 3 years and get asked all the time when we are going to have kids. It really grinds my gears because it is such a personal question and people don't realize a potentially hurtful question if the couple has been trying for a while or had an early pregnancy miscarriage (which is what happened to us this January). I know most people are asking out of love, but it is really none of their business. I am always going to try to remember to encourage other couples to enjoy the stage of life they are in to the fullest :) Looks like you all are doing just that! :)

  5. I love being married without children. Like you said it's a good time to focus on each other and your relationship. I don't see it as being in the middle because not everyone wants or will have kids.

  7. Enjoy you time together! Jacob and I were together 7 years and married for almost 4 before we had Asher. People drove us nuts about when we were gonna have children... Im glad we waited until we did... gave us time to grow, enjoy each other, and get through some tough deployments... The time will come someday, but for now enjoy it!! Enjoy the little things!!

    xx

  10. So true! My husband and I recently went to Disney World (we are 5 yr olds trapped in 30 yr. old bodies) and we kept talking about how fun it was and how easy it was without kids -- then we'd stop and think, is that bad? Isn't Disney made for kids? But it was so true. We would see these poor parents lugging two strollers, diaper bags, and 3 exhausted, whiney kids around the parks and while we will probably start our own family in a few years, it definitely made us pause and think...maybe we'll wait even longer. :) Disney World as birth control... imagine that. :)

  13. What a perfect, perfect post. THE PRESSURE! I mean, my bf and I aren't even engaged yet and my sister jokes about us having kids. We still aren't 100% sure we want any in the first place, but I definitely agree about taking time to enjoy "the middle." xoxo.
